What causes dry skin?

There are many causes of dry skin — everything from cold weather to tight clothing, and even pregnancy can contribute to problem areas. 

For example, when it’s cold our sebaceous glands produce less oil — and without this protective lipid layer, it’s difficult to maintain the moisture levels in our skin. Thin areas without subcutaneous (fatty) tissue and sebaceous glands such as shins, elbows and knees are at particular risk.
